How to Photograph Food for AI Cooking Videos

· 5 min read

With See It. Cook It., your photo is the starting point for the whole video. The clearer the dish is in the photo, the better the result. You don't need a fancy camera. Your phone and a few habits make all the difference.

1. Find soft, natural light

Put the plate near a window with indirect daylight and switch off overhead kitchen lights. Side light shows off texture, like the gloss on a sauce or the crumb of a cake. If the sun is harsh, tape baking paper over the window to soften it.

2. Choose the angle the dish deserves

  • Overhead (90°): bowls, pizzas, salads and anything arranged in sections.
  • 45°: pasta, plated mains and most everyday dishes.
  • Straight-on (0°): burgers, layered desserts and stacks, where height is the star.

3. Fill the frame

Get closer than you think. The dish should be the obvious subject, with little background clutter. Crop out kitchen mess, bottles and phone cables.

4. Style for a few seconds

Wipe drips from the rim, add one fresh garnish (herbs, lemon zest, a crack of pepper), and shoot quickly while the food still looks fresh and glossy.

5. Then make the video

Open See It. Cook It., upload your photo, choose yourself or an AI chef, and pick a kitchen that matches the dish. Need inspiration for what to cook next? Browse our recipes or the Video Hub.
